Yě lǜ lián kōng, tiān qīng chuí shuǐ, sù sè róng yàng dōu jìng.

野绿连空,天青垂水,素色溶漾都净。

Róu liǔ yáo yáo, zhuì qīng xù wú yǐng.

柔柳摇摇,坠轻絮无影。

Tīng zhōu rì luò rén guī, xiū jīn bó mèi, xié xiāng shí cuì xiāng jìng.

汀洲日落人归,修巾薄袂,撷香拾翠相竞。

Rú jiě líng bō, bó yān zhǔ chūn míng.

如解凌波,泊烟渚春暝。

彩绦朱索新整,宿绣屏、画船风定。

Translation

Wild green stretches to the edge of the sky; blue heaven seems to bend down into the water. Pale, pure colors dissolve and shimmer, and everything appears washed clean. Soft willows sway gently; light catkins fall, almost without a shadow. On the islets, the sun sets and people begin to return. Women in long kerchiefs and thin sleeves compete in gathering fragrant plants and green leaves. As if they knew how to walk lightly over the waves, they moor by a misty sandbank, where spring is fading into dusk. Colored ribbons and crimson strings have just been set in order. Before the embroidered screen, on the painted boat, the wind has stilled. Golden phoenix ornaments sound upon the twin-necked lutes; from them are played the hidden sorrows of all ages — but who can truly understand? Like pearls large and small bursting across a jade plate, the notes scatter bright and quick. Wine rises to the painted face, and the beauty of flowers and the beauty of her expression shine together. Listen again: the whole sorrow of a Han palace lady seems poured into one song. When it ends, the river lies empty, and the moon is still.

Analysis

This lyric describes hearing two pipas performed aboard a boat. It is not merely a poem about music. Zhang Xian fuses lakeside scenery, late-spring dusk, graceful women, painted boats, the sound of the instruments, wine-flushed faces, flowers, and the silence after the music into one highly refined sensory composition. The first stanza begins with an expansive scene: wild green reaches the sky, blue heaven hangs down into the water, and pale colors shimmer cleanly across the surface. The world feels washed, open, and pure. Then the focus narrows: soft willows move, and light catkins fall so delicately that they seem to have no shadow. This is typical of Zhang Xian's art — he does not merely describe objects, but also light, movement, reflection, and almost invisible transitions. The scene then shifts to human figures at dusk. 'As if they knew how to walk over the waves' evokes the image of the goddess of the Luo River, giving the women an almost supernatural grace. The second stanza centers on the music. 'From them are played the hidden sorrows of all ages — but who can truly understand?' is the emotional center of the poem. The music is beautiful, but it also carries a deep, ancient sadness that few can fully grasp. The line comparing the notes to pearls scattering across a jade plate clearly recalls Bai Juyi's famous 'Pipa Xing.' The ending changes everything. After the richness of color, music, wine, and beauty, the poem closes with emptiness: the river is wide and still, and the moon is silent. This final image turns sensual pleasure into lingering melancholy. The poem's real depth lies in that movement from ornate beauty to quiet desolation.

Zhang Xian, courtesy name Ziye, was a Northern Song ci poet from Wucheng. His lyrics are known for elegance, delicacy, and refined depictions of lakeside scenery, urban entertainments, music, banquets, and romantic feeling. He was especially admired for his skill in writing shadows, light, and subtle movement, earning the nickname 'Zhang of Three Shadows.' His work occupies an important place in the development of Song ci: it inherits the sensuous grace of earlier lyric traditions while moving toward the more detailed, atmospheric, and psychologically nuanced style of the Song.
