Silk-Washing Creek · Jujube Blossoms Fall on My Robe

Su Shi

Sù sù yī jīn luò zǎo huā, cūn nán cūn běi xiǎng sāo chē.

簌簌衣巾落枣花,村南村北响缲车。

Niú yī gǔ liǔ mài huáng guā.

牛衣古柳卖黄瓜。

Jiǔ kùn lù cháng wéi yù shuì, rì gāo rén kě màn sī chá.

酒困路长惟欲睡,日高人渴漫思茶。

Qiāo mén shì wèn yě rén jiā.

敲门试问野人家。

Translation

Rustling softly, jujube blossoms fall on my robe and headcloth. South and north of the village, silk-reeling wheels are sounding. Beneath an old willow, a man in rough clothes is selling cucumbers. Drowsy from wine and tired by the long road, I only want to sleep. The sun is high, and I grow thirsty; idly, I begin to think of tea. So I knock on a door, trying my luck at a country household.

Analysis

This lyric records a simple journey through a rural village. Its power comes from ordinary details rather than grand emotion or elaborate allusion. Su Shi captures early summer through touch, sound, sight, bodily fatigue, and a small human action. The opening line is wonderfully immediate. Tiny jujube blossoms fall softly onto the traveler's clothing. The next line expands the scene through sound; silk-reeling wheels can be heard throughout the village. The image of a cucumber seller beneath an old willow is plain but vivid. The second stanza shifts from observation to physical sensation. The speaker is sleepy from wine, tired from travel, and thirsty under the rising sun. The final line is deliberately modest: he knocks at a rural door to ask for tea. That plain ending is the poem's charm. Su Shi is not standing apart as an elegant observer. He is inside the scene, turning everyday rural life into poetry without exaggerating it.
